Fiona Stewart is a locally-based artist with vast experience in wide-ranging, inter-disciplinary art projects. From working on set design for blockbuster films, to print making, fine art painting to handcrafting and drawing / printing tiles, Margate Tile Makers is excited to welcome Fiona's contributions to the project and to exhibit and sell her beautiful ranges. Her ranges include tiles imprinted with locally-foraged seaweed, exquisitely painted birds, sea creatures and botanical designs and also a unique 'cabinet of curiosities' range. I graduated in costume design at Edinburgh College of Art, followed by a theatre design and scenic art post graduate degree at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. In 2003, I was the recipient of the inaugural Jocelyn Herbert Award for Stage Design. Since then I have worked as a freelance scenic artist enjoying a varied career painting backdrops, murals, scenery and props for stop motion animation, tv and film, theatre, opera and retail. Work credits include; Wes Anderson’s, ‘Isle of Dogs’ and ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’, many West-End shows and high end retail painting for stores like Louis Vuitton.
Since moving to Ramsgate and having a family, I began to make time for my own practice which is painting and printmaking. I have exhibited my original prints for the last three years at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair and exhibiting in many joint and group shows at the Pie Factory and Viking Gallery, Margate, Herbert Read Gallery, Canterbury, Vinylhead Gallery and Gallery 98, Ramsgate. Currently her original prints and paintings are represented by the Lilford Gallery, Canterbury.
Design / handcrafting inspirations
The tile ideas I am developing are inspired by my love of botanical prints and traditional hand painted tiles. I’m excited to combine my techniques of hand-painting large scale murals and backdrops with handmade tiles. I’m looking forward to offering custom design tile panels and backsplash as well as individual tiles. I’m also hugely inspired by traditional print methods and hope to bring some of my printmaking practice into my future designs.
Being a Margate / Thanet-based artist
Thanet has a great creative energy. I'm enjoying being part of the thriving art scene in Thanet, printmaking at Resort Studios and DBA Editions and taking part in local exhibitions. Memories of coastal walks, textures, natural forms and layers inspire all my work.
Being involved with the Margate Tile Makers
I’m really excited to be asked to take part in this project. I’m looking forward to using my skills in a different way and producing functional handmade artisan tiles. This project is an opportunity to give employment to local creatives and crafters, improve the local economy and reduce impact on the environment and this is of great importance to me.
